Personnel File - September 2009: Engineering
Office Principal, Michael Baker Corp.
Larry Allen helped start the Greensboro office of Michael Baker in 1998. He has spent much of his time on the FedEx sorting hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport. The Moon Township, Pa.-based engineering firm designed and oversaw construction of a 9,000-foot runway and moving a section of Bryan Boulevard. The Garner native, 35, went to work for Michael Baker in 1997 after getting a bachelor’s from N.C. State.
Why civil engineering? I started in aerospace engineering, but the job market wasn’t good. The only growing companies were out West. I wanted to stay on the East Coast, so I switched to civil engineering.
What challenges arose from construction at an airport? The project required relocating 2.5 miles of roadway. We transferred traffic onto the new section in one weekend. The westbound traffic was transferred first after we built connecting ties at each end. Then the ties for the eastbound lanes were constructed, and those lanes were shifted. It required a lot of coordination.
