NOEL ALLEN, Allen, Pinnix and Nichols PA, Raleigh
While attending Elon University, I served as president of its Student Government Association. That experience taught me a lot about public service, leadership, prioritization, achieving goals and the value of appreciating both sides of a dispute.
Vita: Born Oct. 23, 1947, in Greensboro; bachelor’s degree from Elon University, law degree from UNC Chapel Hill and postgraduate law in international competition at University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands; wife and two children.
What he’d be if not a lawyer? I was accepted to seminary as well as law school. Once in a while, I still catch myself preaching rather than arguing..
Memorable case: Delta v. Vishay. My client was a North Carolina-based manufacturer that distributed its products around the world. A third-party broker brought antitrust claims against the company in California regarding alleged territorial and price restrictions for sales into Korea. We were able to get a California federal court to dismiss those claims. Subsequently, we successfully sued the third-party broker in North Carolina for unfair business practices.
Passions: Elon University. I have been a member of its board of trustees since 1985 and have served as chair of the board, three long-range planning committees and the presidential search committee.
Why he chose to specialize in this field: he program in Amsterdam dealt with the transborder implications of antitrust jurisdiction and enforcement. The subjects combined my interests in international, trade-regulation and administrative law.
Favorite book: Carl Sandburg’s multivolume biography of Abraham Lincoln.
