CONSTRUCTION WINNER

I started college during the Vietnam era. After two years of undergraduate, I completed active duty in the Navy, returning in 1967 to finish at Guilford College. During my senior year, a constitutional-law professor required me to write two 10-page research papers each month until graduation. This cruel and unusual assignment helped hone the writing skills needed for law school and taught me to write quickly and in a cogent fashion.

Vita: Born Feb. 8, 1945, in Richmond, Va.; bachelor’s from Guilford College and law degree from UNC Chapel Hill; wife, two children and four grandchildren.
What he’d be if not a lawyer: Many things interest me. As an occupation, I would probably try my hand at business, matching sellers with buyers.
Memorable case: Representing a North Carolina county in resolving disputes arising out of the design and construction of a regional prison. Also, serving as the public-agency appointee for seven years on dispute-review boards in connection with the design/build construction of three toll roads in Southern California.
Favorite place:  Outdoors.
Heroes: Those who have served in combat and support roles in the U.S. military.
Favorite book: Points of Rebellion by William O. Douglas.
Don’t ask him to: Retire.
