Jim Fain, 64, has been the state’s secretary of commerce since 2001, when Gov. Mike Easley appointed him to be the lead man for the state economy. The Hendersonville native was appointed to a second term in 2005. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UNC Chapel Hill in 1971 and got his MBA there in 1975. Before joining state government, Fain spent 25 years with what is now Wachovia Corp., rising to president of the Triangle market. Prior to his appointment as secretary, he served as the Commerce Department’s assistant secretary for economic development. He recently discussed the state economy and its future.
