Profits up at Winston-Salem-based Hanesbrands

Hanesbrands reported a $154.6 million profit for the second quarter, driven by increased sales in apparel. That compares with $121.6 million a year ago. The company raised its 2014 earnings guidance by 40 cents.

Raleigh earns top spot on Forbes' list of best places for business

RoundPoint Mortgage to lay off 166 in Charlotte

RoundPoint Mortgage Co. will lay off 166 workers in Charlotte, according to a notice filed with the N.C. Department of Commerce. The company, a subsidiary of RoundPoint Financial Group, did not give a reason for the layoffs but said most will happen around Sept. 19.

VantageSouth, Yadkin post strong second quarter results

Statesville-based Yadkin Bank and Raleigh-based VantageSouth Bank both posted gains in net income for the second quarter, with VantageSouth reporting a 67% increase from a year ago. The banks have a combined 74 branches after completing a merger on July 4. Combined, the two banks would have generated operating income of $15.5 million, excluding taxes and merger costs.

Cambro begins hiring in Alamance

Cambro will hire 60 people for jobs at its new production and distribution center in Mebane, which is expected to open in early 2015. The California-based company announced earlier this year it would invest $30.4 million in the plant and hire 300 workers. Cambro makes storage items for the food-service industry.

UNC Wilmington partners with MARBIONC tenant

UNC Wilmington formed a partnership with Ocis Biotechnology that will give the private company licensing rights for a product being developed at the school's MARBIONC center. Researchers at the marine biotech center are creating a topical product that will be used to treat wounds.

Spectra Group bringing 250 jobs to Charlotte

Princeton, N.J.-based Spectra Group will open a Charlotte office, creating 250 jobs with an average annual salary of $84,996. The jobs will be based in downtown's BB&T Center and will provide services for the financial industry.

Heritage Home moving headquarters to High Point

Zipper maker expanding in Oxford

Duke Energy begins cleanup of former gas plant property in Kinston

Duke Energy has begun cleaning up the site of a former manufactured-gas plant in Kinston that has been dormant for more than 60 years. The Charlotte-based utility plans to clean 14 such sites, where it used coal to manufacture gas for street lamps before natural gas became available.
