Poster children

Between 1908 and 1924, Lewis Hine traveled the country documenting the working conditions of children on behalf of the National Child Labor Committee. The photographer spent some of that time in North Carolina — where a quarter of the labor force was younger than 16 — though some of his subjects went unidentified. In the March issue, we document how a retired social worker living in Massachusetts tracked down the identity of one unknown Tar Heel girl, but Hine took hundreds more in North Carolina. Here is a small sampling, including the photographer’s captions, courtesy of the Library of Congress. Click here to view.
